Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta
On September 7th, some of our Westwind celebrities, aka “The Donnas”, and staff were excited to compete in the 2014 Richard Henry Dana Charity SUP Regatta. The annual event aims to bring together business, civic, and social leaders to raise money benefiting our local community. Since its inception in 1999, the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta has raised over $600,000 for local charities through corporate donations, sponsorships, and individual contributions.
Our crew competed in the “around the island” and sprint races. Proud to bring home the 2nd place trophy, Gretchen Benedetto of “the Donnas” said, “It’s such a great event and so much fun! I am really proud of Lisa. She really has been working hard and it was great to have her out there!” It was great talking with Gretchen and hearing the excitement she has toward this sport and the paddle crew.
In response to what kind of workouts she has been doing prior to this race Gretchen told us, “The girls and I go out with Steve (Steve Serafino of Westind Sailing) on Wednesday mornings and do interval workouts that have really helped. He is so great coming out to the event, and hearing him on the water with us really helped.”
Congratulations to “the Donnas” (Donna Danielson, Gretchen Benedetto, Terry Welker, and Lisa Hazelton), and Westwind staff, Spencer Frost, Kyle Baldovin, and Tamara Tanner for paddling hard with the usual smiles on your faces!
Spencer Frost summed up the event perfectly, “The only thing better than paddling with great friends is paddling with great friends for a great cause.” We would like to thank Dana Point Yacht Club and its sponsors for hosting a fun filled event!
