Kevin Mullen has been a sailor his whole life so when he and his wife Mimi had children they wanted to share the gift of sailing with them.

The Mullen family has been sailing with Westwind for over 5 years. As a kid Kevin learned to sail through the Mariner’s program in Dana Point. After getting his capitain’s license he ran the 82-foot schooner “Kelpie” for over 15 years. He’s also taught sailing lessons aboard the “Alaska Eagle” at Orange Coast College. Mimi says “our kids always wanted to learn to sail like their Dad. Once they started with Westwind the sailing bug hit hard and they have been on the water ever since!”

All the Mullen children, Jackie, Christopher, and Claire started with Westwind in the Mini Mates program and now participate in the Sailing Club. Jackie, 13, just joined the Mariners Junior Program and is looking forward to improving her skills so she can plan some bigger sailing trips. Christopher, 11, plans on spending his summer sailing to improve his racing skills so he can join Mariners with big sister Jackie next year. Claire, 10, is participating in several Westwind Camps this summer and is aiming to win some of the Tuesday night Soda Can Races hosted by Westwind Sailing.

When I asked Kevin and Mimi about any plans for a family sailing adventure they expressed their gratitude to live in such a fantastic place as California but look forward to planning a trip afar in a year or two.
